Located on a large property in Plettenberg Bay, The Garden Route, South Africa, the site was originally intended for a residential development before the owners decided to retain it as a single private estate.

The brief called for a substantial three-storey residence accommodating an extensive program of living, entertainment and recreational spaces. Equestrian facilities form an important part of the property, reflecting the owners’ interest in horse riding and allowing the architecture to extend beyond the house into the wider landscape.

The scale of the site provided the opportunity to develop the residence as a series of interconnected spaces and volumes, balancing the considerable structure with a strong relationship to the surrounding landscape.
