Positioned along Rodger Street, one of Mossel Bay’s most prominent residential addresses, The Bay occupies a steeply sloping site with uninterrupted north-facing views across the town, the bay and the distant Outeniqua Mountains.

The clients’ brief called for a home that would function primarily as a single-storey residence, despite the challenging topography. This was achieved by establishing the main living platform at street level, allowing direct access to the principal accommodation, while secondary accommodation is positioned beneath the elevated structure.

The architectural composition is defined by bold geometric volumes, substantial cantilevers and intersecting planes. Off-shutter concrete contrasts with crisp white surfaces, reinforcing the distinction between the structural elements and the lighter, projecting forms.

Large glazed openings frame the northern views, while deep overhangs, recessed façades and carefully articulated volumes create a strong interplay of light, shadow, solid and void.
