House Solace is a bold contemporary residence in Simola Golf Estate, Knysna, defined by dramatic cantilevered slabs, deep horizontal beams and a series of interconnected architectural volumes arranged across three levels.

The residence was featured on South Africa’s Top Billing, where Tommy Joyce was interviewed in his capacity as Lead Designer, discussing the architectural vision and design of the home.

The design explores the relationship between solid structural forms and generous glazed openings, with projecting roof planes extending beyond the building to create sheltered outdoor spaces. Landscaped roof gardens soften the strong geometry and introduce natural elements at different levels of the home.

Large open-plan living areas connect to multiple terraces and entertainment spaces, each carefully positioned to maximise sunlight, capture the surrounding views and provide protection from prevailing winds. A dedicated gym, bar and additional recreational spaces complement the main living areas.

Arrival is through a generous entrance courtyard, where koi ponds, water features and carefully composed landscaping establish a quieter, more contemplative atmosphere before entering the home. The interplay of water, light and architecture provides a deliberate contrast to the powerful structural expression of the residence.

The residence forms part of Tommy Joyce’s architectural portfolio, designed during his tenure as Lead Designer at Arte.
